Lesson 8 - Making Presentations


Why
  • inform-give you information 
  • educate-expects you to do something with the information
  • persuade-convince you the information is the best
Learning Types
  • seeing-focus on presentation/picture
  • hearing-focus on speaker
  • doing-engaged with the presentation
Parts
  • text-words
  • charts/graphs-data/timeline/comparison (easier to understand)
  • photos/graphics-add visual appeal, visual representation, 
  • audio/video-used to add background, engage the audience and connect with them more
"Rules"
  • simple and easy to read slide-7 lines and 7 words per line
  • state your purpose
  • use images that support facts
  • relax and be friendly
  • don't read the slides to the audience
  • project voice and make eye contact but don't stare
  • practice and know the material
  • slight hand motion to keep the audience engaged
Slide Rules
  • light colored backgrounds with dark text or dark background with bright text
  • use larger font to make slides easy to read
  • make text clean and big
Organize Your Presentation
  • state your purpose
  • present information in several ways
  • end with a summary
Supporting Images
  • Photos, graphics, charts
  • keep people interested
  • reinforce key messages
  • help visual learners understand
  • don't over clutter slides-don't mix clip art and photos
  • borders add more professionalism
Things To Do
  • relax and be friendly
  • avoid taking too fast and reading slides word for word
  • add information and examples in your own words
  • allow time for questions and note taking (if purpose is to inform or explain)
  • answer questions

  • easy to read slides
  • clearly stated purpose
  • graphics and photos used appropriately
  • speaker is relaxed and confident
  • know who is talking when and how long (in a group)
